Roger Allen Nearmyer, 69, passed away at home in Sunrise Beach, Mo. on July 31st, 2011 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born May 10, 1942 in Ottawa, KS. to Clarence Allen Nearmyer and Rosella Birdell (Fields) Nearmyer. In 1964 he married Jan (Andrews) Nearmyer spending the next 47 treasured years as best friends and soul mates, sharing and enjoying their love of a wonderful family. He attended Ottawa schools, graduating from Ottawa High in the class of 1960. He also attended Ottawa University and Emporia State. He worked by trade at the following locations in the industrial machine repair division for Hercules Inc. at Desoto, KS, Western Electric at Lee’s Summit, MO., Swift & Co. at K.C., KS., General Motors/Delco at Olathe, KS., General Motors/ Leeds at K.C., MO, General Motors at Wichita Falls, TX. He was a member of the Olathe, KS UAW retiree chapter, Local # 1021 and the UAW retiree chapter of Southwest, MO.After retiring to the Lake of the Ozarks, he greatly enjoyed sharing lake activities with family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Jan, their children: Dana and Deborah Nearmyer, Darin and Amy Nearmyer, and Lindsay and Justin Hunter, grandchildren; Madison, Blake, Tess, Max, Mary Eloise, Sophie, Cate, Aidan, and Ava. He is also survived by many wonderful friends and relatives.

Obituary for Kristin Deann Carey-Martin

Kristin Deann Carey-Martin, age 41, of Osage City, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011 at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, Topeka.

She was born May 16, 1970 at Stormont-Vail Health Center in Topeka, the daughter of Richard and Patricia (Hoobing) Carey.

Kristin grew up in Ottawa and graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1989. She moved to Osage City in 1993.

She was a Para-Professional for Three Lakes Educational Cooperative in Lyndon for the past 14 years, working at the Osage City Elementary School..

Kristin was a member of Evangelical Grace Lutheran Church of Osage City.
On August 3, 1996, Kristin was united in marriage with John Martin at Osage City.

Kristin is survived by her husband, John, of their home; three children, Mitchell Martin, Jennifer Martin, Travis Martin all of Osage City; parents, Richard and Patricia Carey Mission, Texas; her mother and father in-law, Charlie and Donna Martin, Osage City; brother, Mark Farris and his wife, Mitzi, Norman, Oklahoma; sister, Vanessa Carey-Dunnivan and her husband, Jim, Rantoul, Kansas; brother-in-law, Steve Martin and his wife, Leah, Topeka; sister-in-law Chris Falk and her husband Kevin, of Topeka; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Harry and Opal Hoobing as well as Clifford and Lois Carey.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 13, 2011, at Evangelical Grace Lutheran Church, Osage City

The family will meet with friends at Lamb-Robert Funeral Home, Ottawa from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2011.

Marilyn Mae Underwood, age 85, of Ottawa , Kansas , died Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City , Missouri . She was born on Thursday, December 24, 1925, in Quenemo , Kansas , the daughter of Charles Bush, Sr. and Helen (Baer) Bush.
She was a near lifelong resident of Ottawa.
Marilyn graduated from Williamsburg High School with the class of 1943.
She was a business owner and co-partner of Underwood Supplies in Ottawa.
She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 Auxiliary and active at the Ottawa Senior Center.
In 1943, Marilyn was united in marriage with Louis T. Thornton. He preceded her in death. On Sunday, January 13, 1946, Marilyn was united in marriage with Charles Edward Underwood, Sr. in Ottawa , Kansas . He preceded her in death on January 1, 1996.
She is survived by her: Son-Lynn Underwood of Ottawa, Kansas; Daughter-Marsha Thornton of Indianapolis, Indiana; Daughter-Esther Underwood of Honolulu, Hawaii; Daughter-Diana “Kay” Underwood of Corona , California; 7 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her: Parents-Charles, Sr. and Helen Bush; Son-Charles Eddie Underwood, Jr.; Brother-Roger Bush; Brother-Junior Bush; Brother-John Bush and Sister-Virginia Underwood.
SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2011.
IN STATE: Mrs. Underwood will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary from 9:00 a.m. Friday to service hour, where the family will meet with friends 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening.

Shirley A. (Showalter) Bailey, age 88, of Lawrence, Kansas, formerly of Welda, died Thursday, August 18, 2011, at Presbyterian Manor in Lawrence. She was born on Monday, February 19, 1923, in Garnett, Kansas, the daughter of Howard E. and Helen M. (Manspeaker) Winner.She was a lifelong Ottawa and Welda resident.Shirley graduated from Welda High School with the class of 1941 and Ottawa Business College, formerly known as Clark Business College, in 1941.She was a bookkeeper and cashier for Montgomery Ward in Ottawa from 1951 to 1966 and Union Gas Company in Ottawa eight years from 1966 to 1974. She was a long time member of North Baptist Church of Ottawa.On November 27, 1941, Shirley was united in marriage with Leonard Showalter in Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death May 19, 1957. On December 31, 1970, Shirley was united in marriage with Donald Newton Bailey in Garnett, Kansas. He preceded her in death June 7, 2004.Shirley is survived by her Son-Nelson H. Nelle Marshall (Barnhill) Gollier age 97 of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Thursday August 4, 2011 at Ottawa Retirement Village, Ottawa, Kansas.
She was born February 18, 1914 at Marshall, Missouri the daughter of Marvin and Elizabeth (Pile) Barnhill. She grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School. She received her R.N. at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri in 1936. While working as a nurse in Kansas City she met Dr. Robert A. Gollier and they were later married on June 29, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri. They shared forty-eight years of Marriage before the death of Dr. Gollier on June 3, 1984. Nelle moved to Ottawa in 1939 after her marriage where she has made her home since. She was a homemaker for much of her life. She was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Ottawa and the United Methodist Women. She was a proud volunteer for Franklin County Day Care at its beginning in 1965, and in more recent years at Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and Hope House. Other memberships include St. Luke’s Hospital Nurses Association, General Edward Hand Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Brown Bag Book of the Ottawa Library, and Chapter GL of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Robert A. Gollier, II ( Mary Lynn) of Ottawa, Fred A. Gollier (Gail) of Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Bill Gollier of Lawrence, Kansas, Bo Gollier (Caroline) of Lawrence, Kansas, Dr. John Gollier (Sara) of Ottawa, Sara Jane Raine (Eric) of Leawood, Kansas; eight great-grandchildren, Grant Gollier, Brenner Gollier, Mary Cooper Gollier, Cade Gollier, Aleah Gollier, Addie Elizabeth Raine, Liza Kate Raine, Cal Raine; and a nephew Mike Barnhill (Elaine) of Columbia, Missouri and many special cousins. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a daughter, Jane Marshall Gollier who died July 4, 1965 and a brother, Scott Barnhill. Funeral services will be 11:00a.m., Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church of Ottawa. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. David G. Laury, M.D. was born on September 22, 1917 and went home on December 16, 2010. David was the son of William G. and Phoebe Ellis Laury who were...
David G. Laury, M.D. was born on September 22, 1917 and went home on December 16, 2010. David was the son of William G. and Phoebe Ellis Laury who were longtime residents of Franklin County.

David attended school in Ottawa and graduated from Ottawa University in 1940. He then attended Northwestern University in Chicago and received his medical degree in 1943. While he was in school, he married his college sweetheart, Meldon Henshaw. They shared nearly 67 years together.

David proudly served with the United States Navy in World War II. He was attached to the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre. He remained in the reserves and was called up to serve for two years during the Korean Conflict. He retired with the rank of Commander.

David practiced general medicine in Garnett and Baldwin before settling in Ottawa where he practiced for over 40 years. Specializing in coronary care and obstetrics, he delivered an undetermined number of babies, including both of his grandchildren. He was a member of several State Medical Society committees and served as the Franklin County Health Officer as well as County Coroner.


He was a past president of many organizations including: Kaw Valley Heart Assoc., Ottawa Country Club, Ottawa Lions Club, Ottawa Univ. Alumni Assoc. and the Pan American Medical Society. He was also instrumental in acquiring accreditation for Ransom Memorial Hospital and the building of the Franklin County Mental Health Center.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, wife Meldon, and daughter Pamela Elliott.

David is survived by his son, Thomas David and wife Shannon of Albuquerque, NM, daughter Annie of Denver, Co., son-in-law, John Elliot, Ottawa; grandchildren, Dr. David Elliott and wife Stephanie, Gardner, KS; Krista Russell and husband Shawn, Emporia, KS; great grandchildren, Hannah and Hudson Laury Elliott, Sydney and Isaac Williams and Issac Russell, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

David loved his family, his medical practice, opera and of course, golf. He also loved his Lord and was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Ottawa.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Dec. 21st from 5-7 p.m. at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home. Services will be at First Baptist Church on Wednesday Dec. 22nd at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. E-mail condolences may be left for the Laury family at our website www.Lamb-Roberts.com
